Breckenridge and Vail sit only about 35 to 40 miles apart, and a lot of visitors ski both on the same trip. On a clear day the drive is short. In a storm, Vail Pass decides how long it takes. Here are your real options for getting from Breckenridge to Vail and back, from the cheapest to the easiest.

How far is Breckenridge from Vail?

The route is about 35 to 40 miles: north on Colorado 9 to Frisco, then west on I-70 over Vail Pass, which tops out at 10,662 feet. In good conditions, plan on 45 minutes to an hour. In a snowstorm, with chain restrictions or a pass closure, it can take much longer, and the only real alternative is a long detour through Leadville.

  • Distance: about 35 to 40 miles (55 to 65 km)

  • Drive time: 45 to 60 minutes in good conditions

  • Highest point: Vail Pass, 10,662 ft

  • Road conditions: COtrip.org (CDOT)

Option 1: Free Summit Stage + Bustang (no car needed)

There is no direct public bus between Breckenridge and Vail, but you can make the trip in two legs with a transfer at the Frisco Transit Center:

  • Breckenridge to Frisco: the Summit Stage county bus is free and leaves from Breckenridge Station.

  • Frisco to Vail: CDOT's Bustang West Line connects the Frisco Transit Center with the Vail Transportation Center. It's a paid bus with only a few trips a day, so check the schedule at ridebustang.com before you go.

With the transfer, plan on roughly two hours. It's the cheapest option, but it's harder with skis, boards and luggage, and your day has to fit around the bus times. Pegasus, the Denver to Avon service, also stops in Frisco and Vail; buy tickets in advance.

Option 2: Drive yourself

A rental car gives you flexibility, but winter on I-70 comes with rules. From September 1 to May 31, Colorado's Traction Law can be activated on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison, which includes Vail Pass. When it's on, you need tires with at least 3/16 inch of tread that are winter, mud-and-snow or all-weather rated, a 4WD or AWD vehicle with that tread, or chains. In the worst storms, the Passenger Vehicle Chain Law requires chains or an approved traction device on every vehicle, 4WD included.

Also budget time and money for parking in Vail Village or Lionshead, which fill up on weekends and holidays. All the details are in our I-70 winter driving guide.

Option 3: Private shuttle, door to door

For groups, a private shuttle is usually the simplest way to do it. Ski Lift Limousine picks you up at your lodge or condo in Breckenridge and drops you at your hotel in Vail Village, Lionshead or Beaver Creek, or right at the lifts for a ski day. The vehicle is reserved for your group only, with room for skis, boards and luggage, and our drivers cross Vail Pass all winter.

Pricing is per vehicle, not per person, so the bigger your group, the less each person pays. Get your price in the Ski Lift app. It takes about a minute.
